Geology Tour Road - Joshua Tree National Park

There are countless hikes to do in Joshua Tree National Park. The park is huge and what continues to amaze me is how the ecology in one area of the park can be completely different from other areas of the park. While Geology Tour Road is commonly traversed by car, it is a great hike to do by foot.

I like to bring my dog, Simon, on has many hikes with me as possible. He loves to hike and explore new areas. While dogs are not permitted on the trails in Joshua Tree National Park, they are allowed on the dirt roads. Geology Tour Road is a great hike for anyone who wants to bring their dog with on their adventures. The road itself is long, reported between 17 and 18 miles. The nice thing about it is long hikes are possible but so are short segments.

I prefer hiking on the road rather than driving. The slower pace allows me to really take in the various sites and appreciate them a bit more. The park’s iconic Joshua Trees line the road and they can be seen almost everywhere you look. The various rock formations that the park is also known for can be found in many spots along the road. It is not a strenuous hike on the road. I have not completed the entire road but I have yet to come across a steep and challenging section. This is a great hike for those with dogs or those who do not want to take a steep climb up one of the mountains in the park.

If you take you dog, please remember to be courteous and clean up after them. The park recommends that if you are driving that you have a 4x4 vehicle.
